SURABAYA Sept 1 - Indonesian star Taufik Hidayat defeated China's Chen Hong to regain the men's singles title at the Sanyo Indonesian Open badminton championship at the Kertajaya Indoor Stadium here tonight.
Taufik, the 1999 and 2000 champion, won 15-12, 15-12 to walk away with US$13,600 in prize money.
He skipped the US$170,000 tournament last year because of a dispute with the All-Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI).
Chen Hong, who won the Singapore Open last week, was under pressure from the partisan home crowd and was also rattled by Taufik's superb display.
The match was delayed for about 20 minutes towards the end of the first game when one of the main bulbs at the stadium malfunctioned.
In the men's doubles final, South Korea's Lee Dong Soo/Yoo Yong Sung beat England's Indonesian imports Flandi Limpele/Eng Hian 15-10, 15-11.
The win was sweet revenge for the Koreans, who lost to Flandi/Eng Hian in the final of the 2000 Malaysian Open.
The champions collected US$12,240 while Flandi/Eng Hian earned US$6,800.
In the all-Chinese women's singles final, Gong Ruina beat Zhang Ning 11-6, 11-7. Ruina received US$10,370 while Zhang took home US$6,800.
The women's doubles crown went to China's Gao Ling/Huang Sui, who beat Thailand's Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn/Saralee Thunghongkam 11-5, 11-4.
The champions collected US$10,370 and the runners-up, US$6,800.
In the all-Indonesian mixed doubles final, Bambang Supriyanto/Minarti Timur beat Nova Widianto/Marissa Vita 11-6, 11-4 to also collect US$10,370.
The victory was a fitting farewell gift for Minarti who is quitting the game after this tournament.
She has won a record six titles with different partners in the championship.
She partnered Trikus Haryanto to win the title for five consecutive times from 1995 to 1999. - Bernama
