If you have an Eielson P.O. Box, read this

This will affect several Moose Creek and Salcha residents who live on base and have mail or do business via this post office; for your perusal:

From the NewsMiner, Oct 26, 2011:

The US Postal Service is following through on plans to close its offices on Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base.

The USPS posted notices in the lobbies of the offices Tuesday saying that comments would be accepted for the next 60 days about the possible closure of the offices.

Sen. Mark Begich's office released a statement saying the postal service should remember that with thousands of soldiers in Afghanistan, the usage of the Fort Wainwright post office may be low at the moment. In August, he wrote the postmaster general expressing opposition to the closures and said the offices are important for dependents as well as for military personnel.

The document about the Fort Wainwright closure claims that revenue has declined over the past several years.

However, the very next line gives these revenue totals for the past four years—$526,000; $530,000; $595,000 and $525,000.

The post office closures would result in one union employee at Eielson and two at Fort Wainwright moving to other locations.

The post office would save $104,892 over 10 years by closing the Wainwright office and $60,177 by closing the Eielson office.
