    Tennessee Commission on Indian Affairs

I hereby request the following information from the Tennessee Commission on Indian Affairs:

A copy of any application form(s) required of applicants for state recognition.
Copies of all applications submitted by groups applying for state recognition including all supporting documents and any other communications between applicants and commissioners or staff regarding the application process.

I will be happy to pay reasonable costs for the preparation of these documents. Because some documents may take longer to prepare, I request that they be forwarded as they become available.

Please inform me of the estimated time required to produce these documents.

    Thank you.
    Mark Greene

I called an Executive Session to consult with legal counsel about this correspondence and about a few other issues. When we went back to Regular Session, I read the above letter to the room. It will be on the recording. Furthermore, I made the following statement to all present:
"In the application for recognition process, an inherent feature of the Review Process necessarily involves the Review of personal, sensitive information. Therefore, even though these are records submitted in the course of a public meeting, the Commission is bound by the principle of privacy of applicants. Following a short review of the materials submitted, these records will be returned to the applicants due to the fact that this is a cursory review for completeness. The Commission will return these to the applicants. We do not deem these to be in the possession of the Commission."

I asked if these was anyone present that had their paperwork that they would like assistance on looking it over for completeness and two did come forth. All the assisting was done in front of everyone in the room during an open meeting.

This Commission will continue to do its job in the eyes of its public, unlike before.
