    Legislative “Source” Clarifications

    Legislative “Source” Clarifications
    Posted by Valerie on Feb 14, 2009 in Issues of Others, TCIA, TN Legislation

    The following bills were not originated, sponsored or otherwise generated by the TN Commission of Indian Affairs nor did the originators of the bills follow the mandate of TCA 4.34.103 and present the bills to the Commission for its review and comment.

    Regardless, the bills will be reviewed by the Commission at the Feb. 21, 2009 meeting.

    * HB0186/SB0136 - Redesignates “American Indian Day” as 2nd Monday in September instead of the (current) 4th Monday in September.
    * HB0239/SB1733 - Confederated Tribes Recognition Bill.
    * HB0333/SB1735 - Recognizes “Remnant Yuchi Tribe”.
    * HJR0082 - Designates September as “American Indian Month”.
    * HB1305/SB1804 - Child Custody & Support (ICWA Compliance)

    The following legislative proposals have been requested by the Commission of Indian Affairs and were approved at the Jan. 17 meeting in Memphis:

    * HB1078/SB1015 - Extends TN Commission of Indian Affairs to 2010 (TCIA requested 2011)

    And the following which have not yet posted to the bills search index:

    * Designates Feb. 28 as Annual Dragging Canoe Memorial Day
    * Designates 2010 as Tanasi/Tennessee Native History Year
    * Native American Grave Goods Protection (amendments to existing laws; may be 4 separate acts)
    * Promote reconciliation and reconnection with existing recognized nations

    It’s ironic that this “community” demands that only five people in particular involved in Indian politics must explicitly obey all laws and rules. It’s even more ironic that those five people vetted the legislative proposals openly at a public meeting.

    Re: Legislative “Source” Clarifications

    Isn't the "community" you're referring to a very vocal subset of less than five people?

    There's really no way to track "Anonymooses" except through IP addresses, which vary with every computer. So, indeed, there is no real way to say that several of the Anonymoose aren't really only ONE Anonymoose.

    One new bill & two resolutions have recently appeared.

    HB1692 by Mumpower is essentially the same as HB0239/SB1733, except that it refers to the Chikamaka-Cherokee of the South Cumberland Plateau by the shortened title of "Chikamaka Band. (Wonder where they'll be playing next?)

    Also, SJR0081 and SJR0082 were introduced by Senator Stewart. SR0081 has to do with making 2010 "Tanasi/Tennessee Native American History Year", and designating different months to the study of different tribes. SJR0082 is a resolution to designate various tribes as the "Historic Tribes of Tennessee."

    You can check out the actual wording to the above bills at the Tennessee Legislature website.
