Greek / Latin?

Peter Krieg taught us Greek 45-46. No one really had much interest in Greek. It's unfortunate. Not like Art Swain, SJ, who taught classical languages his whole life at USF. In 42-43 when I was at the Junior Seminary in LA as a freshman, Art, a 6th year student, gave me this advice. "Memorize a Latin sentence everyday." I never did. I almost flunked out of Latin at SAS 43-44, but Celestine Chin rescued me. We used to call Peter Stratagos Pete with a moveable knee. We would tell how he went out to mow the field with his Hopplyte machine.

Re: Greek / Latin?

Although Fr. Peter was at SAS in 1957 when I came I never had him for
a class. I came as a sophomore and he was teaching 1st year Latin,
which I had already had from Fr. Eugene at St. Mary's High in
Phoenix. The main thing I remember about Fr. Peter is that near the
close of evening study hall he would ring his little bell and announce
in his monotone voice (think Henry Kissinger) "It is time for your
spiritual reading."

Re: Greek / Latin?

Fr. Peter WAS at SAS my first year (68-69). He was teaching German,
and sort of "in residence" as I recall it, for a few years.

Fr. Dunstan (Larry) Dunphy taught us 3 years of Latin. Perhaps it is
because the words are so rarely spoken, but in a Latin Class that we
hear them echoing our first year class vocabulary by the one who
taught us.

Re: Greek / Latin?

Fr. Peter taught the Olympians both Latin (freshman year) and Greek (junior year). Some of the favorites were
"Sedete pueri "(sit down boys)
"Properate ad murum" (go to the board)
and at the end of the year in May, he wrote on the board
"Finis Coronat Opus" (The End crowns the Word) so don't slough off.

Then there were the warning before summer break

"Boys, Don't take a vacation from your Vocation"
