Family band gets its stolen instruments returned

Dan O'Brien and his family were reunited with their musical instruments Sunday, less than a week after the instruments were stolen.

On Saturday, Larned attorney Mark Cowell called the Dodge City Police Department to say one of his clients had given him the instruments so they could be returned to the O'Briens for a reward, the police department said Monday.

Cowell turned the instruments over to the police the same day, and they notified the O'Briens.

The family inspected the instruments on Sunday and determined they were still in good condition, so the police returned the items to the family, the police department said. It was not immediately clear whether the cameras and cell phone were also returned.

Cowell said Monday he could not release his client's name, and he declined to comment on whether the client had been involved in the theft.

The O'Brien Family Band came to Dodge City the weekend of Aug. 14 and 15 to perform at Sawlog ÔN Strings, a bluegrass festival near Jetmore. But their trip ended on a sour note the morning of Aug. 17, when they discovered that their instruments had been stolen from their Chevy Suburban.

Someone had broken out the Suburban's passenger window and stolen a Taylor acoustic guitar, two Taylor guitars, a Rigel mandolin, a Weber mandolin and two fiddles, in addition to a digital camera, a cell phone and a video camera.

The instruments alone were valued at $20,000, the O'Briens told the Globe last week. The family offered a $4,500 reward for the return of the stolen items.

The O'Briens did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Monday.
