Kosovo has declared independence on 17 February 2008. A number of states has recognized it. It has caused great turmoil, 300,000-500,000 Serbians protesting in Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro daily. There is a clash over North Kosovo, which constantly refuses the secession from Serbia.

Two days ago, the Serbian government collapsed because of it, and new elections will follow, barely a year after the last ones...only bad things are looking at Serbia.

Re: Kosovo

This is a problem which had been frozen for years and after the ice thawed, the problem come out.
Nothing have been done during this years to ensure a peaceful and effective transition (separation).
They have just been buying time...
Buying time is stupid and it doesn't solve anything.

The should have used all these years to build a consunsus , a great "jirga" between all Balkan parts.

This is not over, about 50% of the world countries have no intention to recognize Kosovo, it will happen only if Serbia will finally accept it.

But most Serbs from Serbia and virtually 100% of Serbs from Kosovo will never accept that, unless northern Kosovo Mitrovica will be given to Serbia.

But this difficult solution will not be accepted by Albano-Kosovar, now they are the ones who are talking about Kosovo integrity.

Very difficult situation.

And more is coming....

Bosnia is next...
Bosnia is a virtual protectorate, it is not a functional independent country and, of course, nothing have been done, since the end of the war and its independence, to settle its status.

Sprska Republic and Croat-Muslim Federation will never work together and we will see a separation soon.
Since nothing has been done to call a "jirga", we will expect a forced solution like in the Kosovo case.

It is all about the stunning incompetence, unwillingness and shameful actitude of the UN,EU,NATO,OSCE and this ridicolous Ahtisaari plan.

Well, I am a political analyst, a really good one, and when I read that plan I understood immediately it was a stupid and incompetent plan, with not a minimal chance to work.

That's the problem: this kind of delicate issues should be done by political experts, not by former statists who are looking for propaganda, a Nobel Prize or some extra money for their pensions.

What can we expect from a plan done by people who doesn't understand the area at all ?

Re: Kosovo

Srbska indeed IS preparing a referendum. If Serbia gives up on EU integrations because most of EU countries support(ed) Kosovo independence, the Bosnian Serbs will most probably attempt to do the same for Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the end, BH might be put in the same situation as Cyprus, as only the Federation gets integrated while its other entity, Srbska, remains out.

Another worrying thing is remilitarization on behalf of Russia, as well as some very troubling concerns regarding Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossettia.

Serbia faces yet another crossroads. The national-conservative patriots are now greatly strengthened in Serbia, and they might win the forthcoming election, ready to form a government. This might lead Serbia into not only isolation, but could damage the entire touchy region, as well as produce territorial claims upon the Serbian western neighbor. The social-liberal democratic forces governing since 2000 might face their doom.

Violence in Serb-populated North Kosovo is now a regular thing. The UNMIK attempts to seize control over it, but the Serbs resist. The Serbs are in despair, the Kosovo Albanians are closing the borders to Serbia, cutting off their medical supplies and, being out of financial sources, are running out of their very limited resources in general. They are facing a humanitarian catastrophe in Kosovo, just as some other minorities. Most now think that the only remaining option is that all 200,000 of them pack up and leave for Serbia proper. WHAT will come out of this?
