Every day we are bombarded with calls. Commercials on television and radio call us to buy things and do activities. Ads in the newspaper call us to respond to their offers. Stories of the successful call us to be like them. Stories of human need and suffering call us to help. Our employers call on us to perform. Our families call on us to do our share. And then somebody says that we are to serve as God calls us. How do we decide which calls to answer? Serving as God calls us gives a standard and a perspective for valuing all other calls. For two-universe Christians the second universe is life’s highest value and our definition of that value becomes the tool by which we evaluate all other calls. For one-universe Christians our definition of life’s highest values becomes the tool by which we evaluate all other calls. From either perspective God’s calls are through all other calls rather than in addition to them. No one has been able to separate a call from God, by whatever definition, from the calls embedded in the events of our daily lives. To serve as God calls us is the sum total of the values that are demonstrated by the way we respond to the multitude of calls that bombard us every day.
