Specific and Severe Penalties Offer A Cure For Inattentional Blindness

Fellow Freedom Fighters:

The two major political approaches to saving bikers' lives are Motorcycle Safety (for bikers) and Motorcycle Awareness (for cagers). We have allowed NHTSA and other Safety Nazis to place emphasis on the former (which sticks it to us), while many more bikers' lives could be saved by shifting emphasis to the latter (which takes it to them).

The single most important factor contributing to bikers being maimed and killed is "inattentional blindness" on the part of cagers. Logic dictates, then, that the focus of any Motorcycle Awareness initiative should be measures that will reduce "inattentional blindness".

Broadly enforced and widely advertised laws mandating specific and severe penalties for the maiming or killing of bikers will reduce the impact of "inattentional blindness" by increasing the expectation of risk, harm or loss cognitively associated with "not seeing" motorcycles. Anything that lessens the specificity or severity of such laws will diminish the intended benefit.

Consequently, it stands to reason that any MRO intending to lobby for the establishment or enhancement of Stiffer Penalties laws should target penalty provisions that are not only severe but also SPECIFICALLY AND EXPLICITLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE MAIMING OR KILLING OF BIKERS.
