Church in Marshall

I too attended the church in marshall for several years and while there were many awesome moves of God that occurred, there were many heartbreaking situations and events. My years there were during the time when Jerry Collum and Michael Barrett were still elders. They had been with Randy for many years and they were NOT "yes" men. They told Randy the truth and they loved him enough to disagree with him when they thought he was wrong. It was a sad time when they left and I don't know if the believers at CIM were ever given a clear understanding as to why the split occurred. Sadly, after Jerry and Michael left, the leadership at CIM became increasingly loyal and defensive of Randy in an unhealthy way. I believe they exalted Randy to a place no human being can handle. I believe this put Randy in a very dangerous position because he no longer had the checks and balances of men who would speak the truth to him regardless of the cost.

Much of what went on at CIM when I was there was people accusing and correcting each other for every imaginable and ridiculous thing. I am not even sure the elders knew about a lot of the nonsense that went on. I saw that the elders were not infallible and they misjudged many situations. This in itself is no big deal. We are all human. However, at CIM it was unacceptable to voice any disagreement or to even hint that the elders might be wrong. I should say here that this was the case with those I had contact with. Others might have been different. Nevertheless, there was a terrible fear of being rejected and this fear kept us in line.

It is my belief that many, including myself, who come to CIM do so out of the desperate need for affirmation and acceptance. Without the proper affirmation from our parents we grow up believing we don't deserve to be loved; we believe we deserve to be punished. We come to Jesus and still we just can't believe God's love is unconditional and freely given and so we accept spiritual abuse because it makes us feel like we are getting what we deserve. In this twisted corner of our minds, spiritual abuse is a form of acceptance and even twisted love. Many continue in this state for long periods of time. Others suddenly have their eyes opened and escape. We come to CIM because we know there is stern correction there and we believe we deserve to be raked over the coals. Even negative attention is still, after all, attention. And if we do everything, say everything and be everything they want us to be, there is the ultimate acceptance.

Our error at CIM was in forgetting the scriptures that tell us "the letter of the law kills." God sent his precious Son because the law couldn't do the job. It couldn't then and it can't now. Where the letter of the law is practiced, there is a lack of grace, a lack of mercy, a lack of longsuffering, and a lack of love. Most of us have read 1Corin 13. The love chapter! It is love that never fails! Not correction, not doctrine, not all the rules and regulations no one can ever seem to live up to, not my ideas or your ideas, but love! The Bible tell us that we have been given the ministry of reconciliation, not the ministry of division. The Bible also teaches that we have been given the Holy Spirit as our teacher, our comforter, our instructor, etc. The Holy Spirit is love. He is gracious, kind and gentle. Too often at CIM I saw correction come in harsh and unforgiving ways from hearts that were hard and un-loving.Too often we buried the wounded instead of healing them.

I still have many teaching tapes by Randy and I am amazed at the revelation and anointing he walked in. It is my prayer that Randy will go back and listen to his own teachings and that he will shake himself out of this place he is now in. I always believed he had a ministry to the entire body of Christ. I find it heartbreaking that he has been detoured and his ministry emasculated by wrong "shepherding" teachings. I pray that he will seek the council of mature Christians outide his circle who will speak the truth to him no matter what the outcome. I pray that the eyes of his understanding are enlightened. The body of Christ needs this man's ministry and it is never too late to recover oneself.

As a footnote, let me say that I personally never had any bad encounters with Randy himself. Most of the abuse I experienced was with others in leadership.
