Schools
I'm moving to Cookham soon and would like to know what the schools are like (primary and secondary) I'm told they are very good. Do your children automatically get in if they are in the catchment area? Or is it a bit of a lottery? The low-down would be much appreciated |

Cookham Primary Schools are brilliant, Cookham secondary schools don't exist. There are three state primary schools and only really enough children in Cookham to fill two of them, but they seem to be very popular with people from Maidenhead as well. There are three main state secondary schools that children from Cookham seem to go to, plus a Grammar school in Marlow which is in Bucks. |

You don't mention how old your children are. If they have already reached school age then you may find your choice of primary school is restricted. The LEA runs a two tier school system in Maidenhead (but three tier in Windsor). The Cookham state schools feed into a comprehensive at Furze Platt, on the north side of Maidenhead a couple of miles away, although other Maidenhead schools also take children from Cookham. The grammar school in Marlow is mixed and occasionally girls go to a grammar school in Beaconsfield but they need first to pass the 11+. That generally means a trip to Aylesbury unless it can be sat at the primary school. I think only Cookham Dean pupils are able to do this. Now for the plug - do take a look at www.cookhamscouts.org |
