The article in full as posted on the Advertiser website: Shock as Cookham Plan is thrown out 9:55am Wed 5th March :: Written by Nick Meakin A dramatic decision to withdraw the Cookham Plan a week before a public meeting was taken by parish councillors last night. The plan - a blueprint for changes in the village for the next 20 years - was set to be discussed at a public meeting at Pinder Hall, Lower Road, Cookham on Tuesday next week, but instead it was withdrawn after a marathon debate at a Cookham Parish Council meeting last night. In bizarre scenes, the parish council meeting descended into farce as councillors struggled to agree on what they were debating about. Cllr John Stretton had made an agenda proposition to withdraw the main proposal document for the Cookham plan. Speaking at the meeting, the councillor said: "This is the wish list of the 47 persons that put together the plan. This does not reflect the wishes of the council and should be withdrawn. "This has got to stop. We should not be discussing this in public until we have enough time to look at the plan properly." After his comments a marathon debate ensued and when the final vote was cast, nearly half of the councillors opted to abstain. The vote was tied and it was left to council chairman Cllr Pat Woodbridge to deliver the casting vote to withdraw the plan and leave the public scratching their heads as to what will be discussed at next Tuesday's meeting. In an attempt to clarify the issue, parish clerk Janet Wheeler said after the meeting: "We will now undertake a complete review of all the working group documents before drawing up our own conclusions. "The council is still encouraging people to come along to the meeting next week with their ideas on the plan. What the councillors will be able to discuss I cannot say. “My notes from the meeting make it clear that the councillors will not discuss the matter in public but I will be encourage them to speak." |

This is awful. It's clear that by 'withdrawn' what they mean is 'Take it out of public domain so we can look at it without all these residents breathing down our necks' And half of them didn't even vote to withdraw it!!! Even more reason now to go to the meeting on 11th and find out what the hell is going on!! |
