The Dinner Gong - SS Australis
I was a very young girl when emigrating to Australia on the SS Australis in 1966. I remember the 4-note melody played on a zylophone (?) / glockenspeil (?) / vibraphone (?) to announce when each meal was being served (at least in the Atlantic dinning room). I am trying to acquire an instrument similar to it, but I am having difficulty describing it to music store staff. If you are familiar with the instrument and it happens to be in a photo somewhere, I would be very grateful to receive a copy (jpeg or pdf) if possible. I would like to keep the dinner gong memory alive by re-enacting that tradition every time I call my dinner guests to the table. Hope you can help! Regards, June |

Hello June. I was a 9 year old returning from Oz to the UK in 1969. I wish I could help you out with the details of the dinner gong as it certainly resonates with me to this day. It was a fabulous ship and I wish I could sail again on her. |
