Southampton-Fremantle June-July 1975
Hi, Can anyone confirm some details about the SS Australis's voyage in mid-1975? My mother, Mrs Myra Winifred Taylor, was on that voyage, leaving Southampton On 10th June (actually, in the early hours of the 11th, due to a slight delay in loading). It was due to arrive in Fremantle on 3rd July, but due to a hurricane encountered in the Indian Ocean, it was delayed, and my mother said she arrived in Australia on 4th July. Can anyone confirm this, or did the ship manage to keep to its original schedule? If anyone was on that voyage, do you remember the hurricane? Please contact me at rickgtaylor@tiscali.co.uk Many thanks. Rick (Roderick) Taylor |

Hello . Yes I remember this Trip I was 8 Yrs Old and travelled from southhampton to melb on the australis with my mum & dad And Older sister returning from our uk holiday. The Hurricane you Mention I Think was The Remanants Of Cyclone Tracey Heading out to sea Which Hit Darwin. we were diverted Because of the Massive Waves which hit the boat. It was a very Rough Voyage and i have Memories of Several People geting very badly hurt falling down stairs and such... I remember looking outside the promanade deck double swinging doors and seeing the massive waves crashing over the side of the ship and seeing people standing outside watching the waves barely missing them... all the major hallways of the ship were lined with ropes to help us get around but many people were very sick. Not sure if this is the same cruise but i definately remember the massive seas and us getting back later than expected. |

Hi Jenni, Sorry it's taken a while to get back to you, but I've only just discovered your reply to my query. Thank you for confirming details of the hurricane that the SS Australis ran into on its way to Australia, and that the arrival was delayed - presumably by one day? Any further details would be most welcome, but you've been most helpful. |
