Hi Peter, I travelled on the southbound journey from Southhampton on the September trip 1972 to Australia. My family were migrants from Holland and we had a great journey, I don't think my brother and myself got much sleep, to much to do! I loved Cape Town and we nearly ended up being late back on board as we couldn't get a taxi back from the table mountain peak, the Canary Islands were good, but one night onboard we had this terrible storm, while on the dance floor we were sliding from one end to the other, scary stuff! Have you any recollection of the waiters from the dining rooms? I have been trying to find a particular person who gave me something I want to return as its valuable, seeing you were on the earlier trip he would have been a waiter in the dining room I think the Pacific, his name was George Phillipis, moustache about 21 and good looking, LOL, they all thought they were! I was 8 going on 9 yrs old when our family of 8 embarked on the SS Australis in Freemantle in early March of '72 for the trip northboud to Southampton. Dad was a minister in Albany WA and had been hired by the Australian Government to be the Protestant ship's chaplain for Dutch immigrants on the return voyage on RHMS Britanis later that year. As this involved getting to the Rotterdam departure point first, we all got a free trip to Holland where we lived off the relatives for 3 months until the Britanis departed. Needless to say, for an impressionable young bloke like myself, this voyage was one of those momentous events in one's life that is never forgotten. I could still talk for hours about the rough seas between Sydney and Auckland, and the smooth seas for the remainder of the Pacific run...every morning seas like glass that would get progressively choppier throughout day only to be like a millpond again the next day; the stunning sunsets; crossing the equator, Suva, Acapulco, the Panama Canal, etc, but I can't share these memories with anyone because they didn't experience them with me. And so I generally just keep possibly the most enriching experience of my life to myself... Anyway, if anyone out there was a kid on voyage 33 northbound on the Australis (or the July '72 Britanis trip) and feels like they want to share memories, drop a line... |

I travelled on board the old gal I think it was late November 1972 from Sothhampton to New Zealand. I have the original tickets. We also encountered a terrible storm between South Africa and Australia. The Captain tried to avoid it by sailing further south, the rigging iced up and we copped the storm anyway. She nearly rolled over. I can remember walking along the gangway with one foot on the bulkhead and the other on the deck. The dining saloon was empty much of that time and the waiters took turns to serve me the various courses just for something to do. |
