Unused KNAC.COM review: M E T A L It began with those 5 letters that directed me last winter to watch 90+ min of an uplifting subject matter that is the heart and soul of what I enjoy most in life and have done so for the last 25 years. Originally I was invited to the AFI Film Festival in Santa Monica, CA to view a different feature that I worked on called “Disaster!”an animated film directed by one of the guys who worked on“Celebrity Death Match” for MTV. So as I was leaving the theatre at the completion of my film I thought I’d take a look at what else is playing during this fest. After scanning the massive tote board in the lobby for a few minutes…there it was in bold type caps: “Metal: A Headbangers Journey” Enough said. Checked the time & theatre location then made an about face downstairs to check this out besides….who the hell was gonna stop me?? I had heard about a film being done about heavy metal but wasn’t aware it was going to be another one in documentary form. I figured it was slated to be another big budget Hollywood hack job ala“Rockstar” coming to the big screen. But to my surprise I learned this had already made the festival circuit in Canada and overseas to critical acclaim. Forward ahead 5 months later… Today April 12th marked the true debut of this film on the west coast complete with a sold out audience of all ages at the Arclight Theatre here in Hollywood. I had emailed Sam Dunn one of the directors many months back viewing it the first time when I told him “watching your experience it might as well have been me up there holding the camera” This Documentary is the FIRST of its kind and by first I‘m talking about taking serious this subject matter unlike Decline….” failed to do 19 years ago (more on that “cringe-fest” in a bit) I had Sam call in my show days prior to the screening to help spread the gospel and discuss assorted matters involving the film. I offered up some of my direct observations that were better suited for the air versus the Q & A that took place inside the theatre at the end of the films completion. Not hard for me to go ultra obscure with my knowledge… In attendance was Kerry King of Slayer, Children of Bodom members and invited down was Phil Lewis of LA Guns and Lemmy who of course is in the film. When the end credits rolled it was a loud rousing round of applause by the crowd and I’m sure that must have been reassuring to the directors Sam & Scot Mc Fayden who also made the trip out. Excellent Genre breakdowns (which are fairly accurate in my opinion) Besides the music & interviews included in the film are segments of •“Heavy Metal Parking Lot” •The PMRC hearings (which I felt were extremely important to include) •Wacken Festival footage (shades of my own experience in 2002) Great quotes, anecdotes, reflections, etc and in my opinion this film gets it right by two guys that took this format SERIOUSLY, not some hired scriptwriters on retainer. Unlike the aforementioned ”Decline” yeah it was a big deal at the time, but a film with the “Metal Years” in the title focused on predominately one style (Glam) one era (The 80s) one location (Sunset Strip) and hardly got into other areas of Heavy Metal that are STILL alive well to this day.....never even bothered. That’s why “Metal “A Headbangers Journey” works even if you’re a casual fan or more hardcore like myself you will come away quite informed. FEATURED INTERVIEWS: Dio *Iron Maiden * Girlschool * Twisted Sister * Motorhead * Slayer * Rob Zombie* Tony Iommi * Slipknot and more. |
