Subject: Motorcycling Accident News/Info
Dear Mr Collins,
First let me write that even though I am a motorcyclist, I fully agree with the recent increases in fines and penalties for reckless motorcyclists and auto drivers. Anyone stupid enough to drive 100+ mph on I-95 SHOULD lose their right to drive. Forever. On the FIRST offense.
Now, since it seem you have been given the stories about motorcycling to report, perhaps you might find a possible article in these recent news reports which I have included below.
You recently reported that the number of motorccyle crashes has gone up over the past 5 years. Yes it has, just not in proportion to the number of new bikers and bikes registered on the road. As I had written to you earlier, the percentage of motorcycle crashes has gone down over the past 5 years. And you failed to mention who is to blame for these crashes, which leads your readers to think that the biker is at fault- most likely for dangerous riding. I personally know of 4 bikers recently involved in bike/auto crashes. In all four cases, the auto driver was at fault. In all four cases the auto driver was not even charged with anything. And in two of the cases, the auto driver continued on their way, after knocking the biker off their motorcycle, leaving the scene of an accident- still no ticket! Perhaps the next time you report on "dangerous" bikers, or motorcycle accident statistics, you should find out WHO is to blame for these actual accidents. Somehow that information is never mentioned. If a person gets food poisoning, the restaurant is always mentioned- why not place blame where it belongs regarding motorcycle accidents?
Here are 26 recent news articles from Bruce Arnold. Please take the time to read them. Perhaps you could write an article about how careless auto drivers have become. If not you, then I hope another reporter will find the numbers worthy of mention. People believe what they read in the Post. If you write that motorcycles are "reckless", then auto drivers feel that the bikers are to blame for any accident. If you did a story about how many motorcycling accidents are caused by auto drivers....maybe....Cars Running Down Bikers...., then maybe people will stop and realize that bikers are not ALWAYS at fault.
Yours,
Mike Gluckman |
