Bruce,
For what it's worth, I believe your right about " ITS ".
They, (NTSB, NHTSA), are waiting for the development of these Accident Avoidence systems to Band-Aid again those problems we face with human error, Distracted Drivers, Etc..We have seen this with ABS brakes, Rear backup sensors, backup Cams, and now with Volvo's front/side impact sensors. Sure these are nice, for auto's and trucks, but will it really protect the motorcylist?
I think not!!!
My reading tells me these " ITS " will be added distractions for the driver, as in tire pressure monitors, Idiot Lights, Etc.. I've seen these changes first hand, with all the other distractions produced in the vehicles today. Yet, we all read about the following same statements as below since the report from NHTSA came out in 2005. And they all (NTSB, NHTSA)say these are recommendations set by them! Ya, ok..what about Human Error, and all the other Distractions, any direct recommendations directed to us Bikers! How about the Feds for Motorcycle Awareness!! Yet they, the Feds speak out of both sides of their mouths about helmet use too. First the Feds claim they don't want to federalize mandatory helmet laws, but they don't hide the fact to announce the endorsements and recommendation to the States to mandate them. ODD!!! Band-Aid, BS!
"Rosenker further noted that, in September 2006, the Board held a public forum on motorcycle safety, prompted by data indicating that the increase in fatalities among motorcycle riders far exceeded that of any other form of transportation. In 2005, he said, 4,553 motorcyclists died in crashes. Since 1997, the rate of motorcycle fatalities has increased by more than 25 percent. Rosenker said the goal of the forum was to gather information about ongoing motorcycle safety research and initiatives, as well as safety countermeasures that might reduce the likelihood of motorcycle accidents and fatalities." |
