Message:   Sure ITS is in the future, conferences that were in prosses from the 1980's-through today: We just may be sitting behind the eight ball if we don't start getting involved now!!! The distraction deterants, just might be more ditractions for the driver of tomorrow!! As noted by the mention of Navigation and Information Centers In cars below, funny how things don't change, and internationally too!
Just my two cents, from being in the auto industry as long as this shits been going on.

" Title varies. First held in 1997 under title IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems. Followed by a second conference in 1999. Absorbs the previous VNIS (Vehicle Navigation and Information Systems) Conferences. Sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Council, with additional sponsors. Held annually since 1999, with conference sites varying each year. Focus of the conference is on “cutting-edge electronics technologies and their applications for ITS.”

Location varies. Sponsored by the American Automatic Control Council, these annual proceedings contain numerous papers dealing with advanced vehicle control systems, traffic control, sensors, and automated highways.

IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference. Proceedings. Piscataway, NJ: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Irregular. 1997- .

Title varies. First held in 1997 under title IEEE Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems. Followed by a second conference in 1999. First held in 1999 as IVEC ’99, this conference addressed numerous topics related to ITS, including: vehicle electronics, navigation, vehicle spacing, traffic control, sensors, steering control, image processing, vehicle guidance, and communication.

IEE Seminar on ITS System Architecture. Proceedings. London, Great Britain: Institution of Electrical Engineers. 2000. 54 p.

The IEE, which is the British counterpart to the IEEE, periodically holds colloquia/seminars on topics dealing with ITS. The proceedings are published as a Digest series. This seminar focuses on ITS system architecture.

Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems : 2-4 November 1994, Boston, Massachusetts. Bellingham, Washington: SPIE – The International Society for Optical Engineering, 1995, 192p.

Contains papers dealing with the application of photonics to ITS. Topics cover areas such as traffic management, sensor technologies, traffic surveillance, and control systems.

Intelligent Vehicles Symposium. Proceedings. Piscataway, NJ: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Annual. 1989- .

Title varies. Originated in 1989 as a "closed" symposium, followed by an “open” symposium in 1990. Held annually since 1991 with varying sites. From 1989 to 1996, the symposium was sponsored by the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. No symposium appears to have been held in 1997. From 1998 to present, the symposium has been sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Council.

International Conference on Road Vehicle Automation. Road Vehicle Automation : Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Road Vehicle Automation. London, Great Britain: Pentech Press, 1993. 309 p.

Contains technical papers concerned with various basic research, system developments, applications, case studies and theoretical work on road vehicle automation.

International Conference on Road Vehicle Automation. Road Vehicle Automation II : Towards Systems Integration : Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Road Vehicle Automation. Chichester, Great Britain: John Wiley & Sons, 1997. 611 p.

International Federation of Automatic Control. Proceedings of the IFAC Symposium on Transportation Systems. Irregular. 1970- .

Title varies, and additional sponsors may be added. Majority of the papers deal with road traffic, with emphasis on automated systems. Subject categories from most recent symposium included automated highway systems, incident detection and management, vehicle control, dynamic route guidance, fuzzy logic applications, video image processing, vehicle automation, and sensors.

International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control. Proceedings. Tokyo, Japan: Society of Automotive Engineers. Biannual. 1992- .

Location varies. Focuses on advanced control of vehicles, covering topics such as: advanced steering and suspension systems, intelligent vehicles, driver assistance systems, human factors, sensors, and vehicle dynamics.

International Symposium on Automotive Technology & Automation. Proceedings. Croyden, England: Automotive Automation Ltd. Irregular. 1972- .

Title varies. Each year, a specific focus is adopted for the symposium. Advances in automotive technologies led to a change in the format of the symposium such that by 1991, five simultaneous dedicated conferences were held, with a specific one dedicated to “Road Transport Informatics.” The 2001 Conference reflects a name change to the “Automotive and Transportation Technology, Congress & Exhibition.”

ITS America. Meeting. Conference Proceedings. Washington, D.C.: Intelligent Transportation Society of America. Annual. 1991- .

Considered to be the foremost gathering of academia, government, and industry in the U.S. as it relates to Intelligent Transportation Systems. Recent proceedings available on CD ROM, with papers accessible by title, session, author, or full text.

ITS in Europe ’99 Congress and Exhibition : Proceedings, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 14-17, 1999. Brussels, Belgium: ITS Congress Association, 1999. 1 computer laser optical disc.

Contains presentations discussing applications of ITS in cities, airports, regions, ports, and travel and tourism.

National Workshop on IVHS: Proceedings of a National Workshop on IVHS, Dallas, Texas. College Station, TX: Texas Transportation Institute, 1990, v.p.

These are the proceedings from the landmark Mobility 2000 National Workshop in which a vision and major program features were set forth for an Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems program in the U.S.

San Francisco Workshop, June 6-7, 1988: Regional Consortion (i.e. Consortium) for R,D,& D on Advanced Technology for the Highway. Sacramento, CA: California Department of Transportation, 1988. v.p.

Contains the conference notes from the Western States Conference on Advanced Transportation Technology, one of the first efforts to promote R&D programs, influence legislation and funding for advanced transportation technologies. Also contains the conference notes from the Berkeley Workshop Multi State/Private Sector Consortium for R,&D on Advanced Technology for the Highway, March 24-25, 1988.

This conference is recognized as one of the first steps toward forging a national interest and support for ITS. Drew more than 100 representatives from federal, state, and international transportation agencies, research organizations, and the private sector. Contains presentations on historical, current, and future applications.

Transportation Research Board. Annual Meeting. Washington, D.C.: National Academy Press. Annual. 1921- .

Annual conference converging engineers, scientists, and researchers, supported by state transportation departments and federal agencies. The papers are categorized by subject and published in the Transportation Research Record series (also known as the Journal of the Transportation Research Board since 1999). The published papers have also been issued on CD-ROM since 1998. Each individual paper is indexed and may be accessed through the TRB Publications Index web site.

Transportation Sensors and Controls: Collision Avoidance, Traffic Management, and ITS. : 18-20 November 1996, Boston, Massachusetts. Bellingham, WA: Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, 1997. 308 p.

A SPIE-sponsored conference covering a variety of topics related to vehicle sensors, lateral control, and collision avoidance.

Title varies. Sponsored by the three premiere ITS organizations in the world: ITS America, VERTIS, and ERTICO. Site of the congress varies each year. Recent proceedings available on CD-ROM, with papers accessible by author, subject, session, paper number, and paper type.
