Message:   Everyone pays for Del.'s lack of motorcycle helmet laws

I often encounter motorcyclists on our highways traveling well over the posted limit with no helmet on, but occasionally attached to the seat. As a physician, I cringe at such a risky behavior. Your editorial of March 19 got me thinking again about this situation.

We are told that a "freedom of choice lobby" has prevented an effective helmet law for 30 years. I as well as many of my colleagues have difficulty understanding this. It really seems to be the freedom to choose a serious head injury or death. What a foolish game of Russian roulette they play. It's also surprising that the health and life insurance industry hasn't played more of a role to pressure state legislators to pass a helmet law. We all pay the costs of prolonged hospitalization and often long-term care for these head-injury cases. Hopefully, Sen. Gary Simpson can help correct this embarrassing legislative oversight.

Delaware's refusal to pass a motorcycle helmet law definitely benefits our organ-donation program! But wouldn't we all prefer better motorcycle safety laws to save more lives?
