Subject:   Why EDUCATE DON'T LEGISLATE Does Not Apply

Message:   Fellow Freedom Fighters,

As is conveyed through several sources posted in this forum, we have scientific evidence that cellphone conversations result in automobile drivers being just as impaired as if they were intoxicated by alcohol. Further, we know that banning cellphone conversations will remove (or at least diminish) the number one source of driver distraction, which will in turn mitigate the inattentional blindness of cagers, which is the leading cause of all motorcycle accidents.

Some bikers are being slow to support cellphone bans, suggesting that this initiative is inconsistent with ABATE's "Educate Don't Legislate" policy. Actually, however, this is an arena where "Educate Don't Legislate" does not apply:

EDUCATION CANNOT CORRECT IMPAIRMENT, BUT LEGISLATION CAN DISCOURAGE IT.

Regardless of the source of impairment--alcohol, cellphone usage or otherwise--an impaired driver is an impaired driver and a danger to all who share the road. So if you're concerned about the political consistency of bikers supporting bans on cellphone conversations while driving, look at it this way:

EITHER WE BAN THE PHONES ... OR WE FREE THE DRUNKS.

Ride Long, Ride Free!

Bruce
