Coil exploded, points melting, any ideas? 1978 3.5L 2 door Carb model

I am having a terrible time with my new points and coil. The points are shorting again and they have done this intermittently since I had the car in 1995. I have measured 5.5A going through the lead to the +ve side of the coil, I think this is far too much. It's going out through the coil -ve to the points which overheat if you are in traffic/ignition on. Recently a new coil I fitted last week exploded after half and hour's driving, leaving oil all over the bonnet. I had to be towed home. The wire to the coil +ve has melted although still carries current. ( see next issue in RRR magazine ) - I could send a picture of this if required. Basically all this excess current is going through the coil and out to the points which also then get so hot the plastic cam lobe melts down. Result= no gap. You can only adjust the gap so much before the cam has melted away.

Do you dear reader by any chance have a multimeter and you could take a reading of your car. You have to do this in series from the wire which you remove from the coil, in through the multimeter , and then the black wire from multimeter to touch the terminal on the coil. All on Amps setting. Even when the points are open I have a draw of 5.5A. What do you get?

The manual specifies a ballast wire before the coil +ve - Do you think that this could be because the ballast wire has burned out. I cannot see it anywhere. To create a spark should really require very little current at all don't you think?

Still no clearer on this longstanding problem.....

Check that you have the corrct coil, should be a ballast resist coil, note, the coil off electronic ignition is no go for the points model. You should have a 16C6 coil.Ballast resist is 1.3-1.5. Primary resist 1.43-1.58.HOPE this helps

Hi Ed,
Gary said, drive the 2CV instead, you will probably not damage that one.

Question: do you ever go a month without having major problems with your steads??
