Help advice needed

Hi RR Boffins very pleased to join yr forum, I have a very serious problem .I foolishly let a member of my family talk me into letting him renew my head gaskets to my 97 p38 4.6 he is a mechanic but its his first v8 .the heads were skimmed and i supplied him with a complete gasket set. to cut a long story short .i turn the key and she purs like a kitten ,open the throttle to 1.5 thou she splutters and water shoots from both tail pipes. obviously both gaskets are letting by but why? he has fixed head gaskets for me before with no problems...Any suggestions please Mac

Re: Help advice needed

I take it the coolant level is dropping & this is not just the normal water from burning fuel? Needs to be eliminated as a cause, as there is no point in stripping it all down again if you are not losing coolant.
If you are, then its all going to have to come apart again.
I am curious as to why this was all done in the first place - esp skimming the heads - if there was not a coolant loss/overheating issue.
Was the gasket set Genuine Parts or from elsewhere? There was an issue in the 80's with the Reliant Scimitar 3 litre V6. Anything other than genuine Ford head gaskets tended to fail very quickly - in mine a payen set lasted about 250 miles.
The early P38s - including your MY - did have block issues with liners moving. Symptoms were water loss & excessive pressurising of the cooling system. (also symptoms of head gasket failure so a strip to check is required)The cure was a new engine.

Re: Help advice needed

Hi paintman ,I agree heads probably didn't need skimming as only oil leak appeared last month , so i let him look at it and he said it was head gasket took him at his word when he said they needed skimming. The engine idles smoothly and starts on the button but as soon as i open the throttle to 1.5 thou it splutters leaves wet patches on the ground 3 inches wide and a foot long equal from both tail pipes and spluttering.Obviously im guessing at head gaskets but curious as to why both ??

Re: Help advice needed

Indeed.
Unfortunately its all going to have to come apart again for all items to be thoroughly checked.
Need to check the liners, heads, all gaskets for correct types AND correct assembly.

Re: Help advice needed

If there is water escaping, it will show up in the oil. Have you any white waxing in the rockers??

Also, before you spend out on a new engine, invest in 2 bottles of Seal-up, available from good spares specialists. It goes in the water sytem and seals the block. It does work and costs about £12 a bottle which is a hell of a lot cheaper than changing an engine.

Re: Help advice needed

Look at www.kalimex.co.uk
Full details on all their products.
Including Seal-up which you will note has been superceded by K-seal although the former is still available.
I can confirm that K-seal does what it say on the tin (plastic bottle actually!)

Re: Help advice needed

Water escaping will not necessarily show up in the oil. Depends where the failure is.
But unexplained loss from the coolant system needs investigation.
Be aware the white gunk in the oil filler is also common on cars that do a lot of stop/start driving without doing any long trips. In those cases it is normal, is not coolant loss, and not a cause for concern.

Re: Help advice needed

Hi guys i did try the super gasket sealer have run VW transporters (water cooled)for a number of years use it all the time ,made no difference put 2 bottles in got to running temp left it for a good 15 mins idles smoothly again as soon as i throttle up to 1.5thou engine splutters but does not overheat , Gonna check it out tomorro got a feeling i maybe barking up the wrong tree .didnt seem to be much water loss was assuming patches on ground were coolant it was dark , maybe its fuel in which case could be fuel pressure,
really appreciate the support and responce bloody good forum.
