P38 fuel starvation
Hi,hopefully someone out there can help me, I have a 4.6 HSE P38 which I have just got on the road and taken my first long trip in today, it ran fine for 200 miles and then started showing the classic signs of a fuel blockage, first running no more than 70, then 60-50 & so on till it just ran at 20mph, frequent stopping of the engine gave it a bit more but it slowed up within a couple of miles, I managed to get it home but dont know where the fuel filter is or if theres any other suggestions, help! please.

Re: P38 fuel starvation
Thanks for the replies, I have a bit of an update, on Sunday morning I thought it best to take the car to the yard where I work so I could look at it further, after standing overnight I thought, hoped, it would have rectified itself, no such luck, started fine but ran dreadful, 20mph max, I stopped & switched it off a couple of times which always seemed to improve it a bit, about a mile from my destination and it suddenly cured itself and ran fine, however, having owned a number of Range Rovers before, I have learnt not to trust them too much, I have located the fuel filter & will change this before trying the car again, its also suggested that I remove the fuel tank & clean the filter around the pump out, thing is, I'm still not sure that it is'nt an electrical fault that came on without warning & left in the same fasion, I live near West London if your mate has any diagnostic equipment then I would be interested to see what it says as I would have thought a fault may well have been stored, Chris

Re: P38 fuel starvation
hi, think you are going the right way there.. find any and all fuel filters and replace.. at work we use extra inline filters on all our engines, the clear plastic ones you know? also make sure there is no back pressure in the tank ie blocked breathers and finally do check voltage at the fuel pump i have known one on an audi to give enough at tick over and slow running but not full power. Hope thats helpful or not a hinderance Phil.

Re: P38 fuel starvation
Hi, thanks for the advice, I'm going to drop the tank, clean it all out & check all pipes, change the filter, I will put one of those clear filters in, I prefer to see whats in it, will do all this over the next few days & then try again, I wont drive it again till I've done the work otherwise I might disguise the fault, ps, it has NGK plugs in, I will stick a new set in and also change the leads, thats just as a precaution, the problem was fuel related, also will get it plugged in & see if any faults stored, hopefully will post results at weekend, thanks everyone. Ps, a previous listing mentioned about the hoses on the cruise system, I had noticed that the cruise on mine all clicked in but did'nt work so I checked my pipes and would you belive it, split pipes! Will change them as well at weekend, just goes to show the help the forum is so thanks for that tip as well, Chris

Re: P38 fuel starvation
Quick update, I changed the fuel filter which looked bad but made no differance, the fuel tank was not nice to remove but when out I could see a fair amount of muck in the bottom and the fuel pump & sender.
A new pump was sourced as having taken the tank out it was'nt worth putting it all back with the old one, another struggle to get the tank back in, rusty pipes, etc, and hey presto its fine, one tip I can pass on is if the pump is noisey then its almost certain to be on its last legs, thanks for the interest.[:D]
