Snorkel, LPG & Harmonic Resonance

My 109 developed a new problem recently, on LPG the engine wouldn't pull below 2000 RPM. The air filter for the snorkel is in the mushroom top and the snorkel pipe is connected to the carburettor elbow by a long rubber pipe.

I also wanted to connect up a Lambda sensor with a stepper motor to the LPG control system but the instructions were incomprehensible.

So down to my local LPG expert, Alan Ponting (0783 339 8695) at Caxton Gibbet, Cambs.

The Lambda system was installed in no time. But diagnosis of the lack of power was more problematic. After a variety of experiments the cause was found to be a harmonic resonance in the snorkel pipe that caused the vapouriser diaphram to oscillate chaotically.

The cure was to fit an "airbox" between the snorkel pipe and rubber pipe to disrupt the resonance.

If you are looking for someone to do LPG conversions - any vehicle but particularly Land-Rovers, repairs or just certification don't hesitate to check out Alan for good value workmanship. Alan says an awful lot of his work is rectifying LPG systems installed by othe companies.
