wandering classic

hello
I hope you can help because I cant see the wood for the trees.

I have a 93 200 Tdi classic coil springs, that is well used.
I dont know the exact mileage but it is evident by looking at the car that all is a bit worn.

With worn bushes & I suspect dampers the car has a tendance to wallow & wander on small country roads, to the point it is not much fun to drive.

When looking at what replacements are available, there is such a choice I dont know where to start.

Does anybody have any experience they can share, to help me choose.

I do not off road, I live in the French Pyrenees & I need a Range rover as my wife cannot drive our
Series III(steering too heavy).
I run with studded tyres all round when the snow & ice arrives & I have a set of chains for the front axle, but have never had the need to use them yet( 2 winters).
I use road bias tyres the rest of the year.

Whilst replacing some susppension parts, I would like to siffen up the ride a little to deal with the bouncing around on small poor country lanes & hence,I do not need the long articulation for off roading.
I only occasionally tow,& then not far, so I assume my standard coil springs are ok.

I have been advised to fit a blue poly kit &
Monroe dampers all round.
I have read that apparently, a bilsten steering damper provides a great improvement.

I'm in the dark here because obviously,I can't try a suspension part to find if its right for me, once it is paid for & installed, there is no turning back.

Any of your advise would help

Many thanks Mark

Re: wandering classic

There are lots of different bushes & shock absorbers & everyone will have their own opinion as to which is best. Some will say the the polybushes wear the component they are fitted into.
If your bushes & shock are the originals & the car has an appropriate mileage for the year then they are due for replacement. Also check the steering balljoints (track rod ends) for play and ideally the front swivels to see if they have the correct preload.
For my 5p's worth, there isn't a lot wrong with standrad genuine parts Land Rover bushes & shock absorbers.

Re: wandering classic

Don't forget the rear bushes as they can cause some interesting handling when worn.
