Early RR Chassis Numbers

Hi All, I am located in Australia and have an early Range Rover which has been in the family for quite a while. Chassis number is 35600577A. Can anyone shed light on how early it actually is? Cheers, Charles

Re: Early RR Chassis Numbers

Above is correct but according to 'Range Rover - the Firsr Generation' by James Taylor and Nick Dimbleby
on page 35 it says that in 1972 serial nos. 35600069 - 35600820 were built.

Re: Early RR Chassis Numbers

Hi,
The Range Rover in question has a low compression engine and was fitted with a 4 speed manual gearbox, and it is right hand drive.

In the first 2 years of production, a total of 8,000 vehicles were made (not including the Velar) As yours is a low number, one can assume it is a very early model, probably a 1970.

I hope this is of help.

Re: Early RR Chassis Numbers

I have Chassis number 35600558A, which was produced 12th October 1972, it is right hand drive, and I believe the letteer A signifies for export. Regards Keith

Re: Early RR Chassis Numbers

Nope! the A stands for the 'Design' being 'Unmodified'.

The 356 part means that it was 'RHD for Export' with '355' being 'Destination: Home market, right-hand drive (RHD)' alomg with the rest...

Re: Early RR Chassis Numbers

Just a quick add on here, The chassis numbers don't always indicate which order the cars were made in. Basically the built the chassis, stacked them for use and removed chassis from the pile when needed.
I know many cars which are out of number order to age, if you see what i mean. I had a Range Rover which indicated the chassis was built in 1977, but the car was made in 1978.
